Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. These homes were largely for white women, and that is what led me to these elite families in Washington, D.C. I thought, what did women in that circle do, you know, if they wanted to adopt a baby in secret? And remember, in the '40s and the '50s, even adoption wasn't something that we talked about, you know, on the forefront the way we do now.

“Little Shop of Horrors,” a 1982 originally off-off-Broadway musical based on the 1960 film of the same name, is a farcical horror comedy set in a New York City flower shop. One of the employees, Seymour (Conall P. McGinn ’25), discovers a mysterious plant (Jordan J. Woods ’24-’25) that he later names Audrey II after his love interest and co-worker (Elizabeth M. Crawford ’26). Initially, Audrey II is great for business — but it quickly becomes apparent that the bloodthirsty and manipulative plant is not a boon for the store and its employees. President Joe Biden put on his comedy hat at the White House Correspondents' Association's annual dinner Saturday – throwing a major barb at Donald Trump for standing trial over a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Biden, 30, has obvious ties to politics, but she also married a political junkie. Her husband, Peter Neal, interned at the White House during the Obama administration, and contributed to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

On the border of Echo Park and Frogtown, this century-old small theater has quickly become the go-to spot for one-man shows and outside-the-box comedy, from clowning to game shows. That’s because unlike many border towns across Texas, Tijuana is a prominent metropolitan area. Migrants use legitimate travel means to get there — some come by bus, others fly direct if Mexico doesn’t require a visa for people from their country of origin.

That’s in part because the government of Mexico has upped enforcement against migrants traveling atop freight trains through the country up toward Texas. Isacson said smugglers used to tell migrants where to cross, based on relations with organized crime and corrupt officials. The Rio Grande Valley in Texas saw the most migrants starting in 2013, and monthly agency figures dating back to 2020 show that trend continued until May 2022, except for a month when Del Rio had the highest numbers.

Chants accused U.S. journalists of undercovering the war and misrepresenting it. "Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide," crowds chanted at one point. With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year's event.

The New York decision marks a rare triumph since his downfall, but experts said it’s unlikely he’ll be able to overcome his California conviction on similar grounds. In Weinstein’s Los Angeles trial — where he was indicted on 11 counts of rape and sexual battery — prosecutors took a similar approach, calling four women to the stand who accused him of uncharged assaults in New York, London, Puerto Rico and Toronto. Even if the HRDC production of the “Little Shop of Horrors” doesn’t change the lives of the audience, it might well be the “the coolest thing” they get to see this semester. The effect is achieved not just through characterization and set design, but also the venue itself; the HRDC production of the “Little Shop of Horrors” utilizes a much more intimate space. Of course, there were also many famous journalists present, such as NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Lester Holt. After 10 minutes, Joe sat back down in his seat as "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost walked up to the podium and took the comedy reins.
According to yearly agency data, San Diego saw the highest numbers of migrants from 1973 to 1997, then Tucson took the top spot until 2012. San Diego hasn’t been the top region for migrant arrests since at least October 1999, according to monthly agency figures. For the first time in decades, San Diego has become the top region along the southern border for migrant arrivals. There will also likely be a spotlight on the many journalists detained and otherwise persecuted around the globe for doing their jobs, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been imprisoned in Russia since March 2023. “If someone does this once or twice, it’s likely they’ve done it a lot of times,” Medwed said.

“Judgment day is coming, baby,” former state Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) said when I called him with new tax numbers. With a touring production of the revival of “Funny Girl” just wrapping up its run at the Ahmanson Theatre, it makes sense that the Academy Museum will screen William Wyler’s 1968 movie adaptation. "Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price— their lives—to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth," CPJ Program Director Carlos Martínez de la Serna said in a statement. According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants. One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents' Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists.
In a stunning reversal, a New York appeals court overturned the conviction of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, citing errors by the trial judge. A 1996 change to California evidence law broadly allows uncharged victims to testify in sex crimes cases if their allegations can help prove a pattern of behavior or propensity to commit a crime, said Dmitry Gorin, a former L.A. If Weinstein’s lawyer Mark Werksman has any doubts about whether the same legal strategy will work in both states, he didn’t betray them in his comments after Thursday’s victory for his client. The show has certainly been a personal project for Haley M. Stark, the director. Seeing the production of “Little Shop of Horrors” at her local high school when she was in her eighth grade altered the trajectory of her life. “‘Little Shop’ is such a well-known show so I think it’s a challenge to bring something fresh,” she said.

Just as there are some exterior finishes that make a house plan unique, there are interior options that also contribute to unique house plans. There are many combinations of rooms, design finishes, and extra touches that can be added to a plan to make it unique. The important thing to remember is that the home should be practical for your needs, but that it also has a bit of "you" in it. Of course, the lot you choose will also help to direct you as you look for a unique house plan. For example, a wooded lot offers views from the main living area that begs for a rear great room, or even a rear covered porch and/or sunroom. Finally, unique house plans often incorporate unique features and architectural details that make them stand out from other types of homes.

Chingasos is slang for a beating or going to blows with someone, although it can mean a harsher curse word to some. Born in Bolivia, his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 8 months old.

Engineering design is an iterative process used to identify problems and develop and improve solutions.
Throughout the Design Thinking process, teams often cycle back and forth between stages, iterating on ideas, gathering additional insights, and refining solutions based on feedback from users and stakeholders. This iterative approach enables designers to continuously improve and innovate, ultimately leading to more effective, user-centered solutions. Fourth-graders should know that engineering design is a purposeful method of solving problems and achieving results. They should be able to state a simple design challenge in their own words, test a solution, and communicate the findings with drawings and models. Much like scientific inquiry, engineering design is a dynamic process, not a rigid method. As engineering and science are often confused, it is helpful to draw a distinction.
If you still are not sure which process to follow, you should read Comparing the Engineering Design Process and the Scientific Method. Students engineer a working pair of shin guards for soccer or similar contact sport from everyday materials. Since many factors go into the design of a shin guard, students follow the engineering design process to create a prototype. Students are asked to design a hockey stick for a school’s new sled hockey team. Using the engineering design process, students act as material engineers to create hockey sticks that have different interior structures using multiple materials that can withstand flexure testing.
What Is Simulation-Driven Design? - ENGINEERING.com
Fourth-graders should start to answer the question "How are technologies created?" by confronting simple yet systematic design challenges. Eighth-graders should be able to use a more elaborate engineering design process, including problem definition, the use of prototypes, testing and iteration, and trade-offs. Twelfth-graders should have a deep understanding and a broad array of design skills, including optimization. The engineering design process usually begins by stating a need or want as a clearly defined challenge in the form of a statement with criteria and constraints. Criteria are characteristics of a successful solution, such as the desired function or a particular level of efficiency.
Electronic Product Design — and the Technology That Makes It Possible

This blog post will provide an overview of the engineering design process and best practices for designing products, systems, and infrastructure. Students are introduced to the concept and steps of the engineering design process and taught how to apply it. In small groups, students learn of their design challenge (improve a cast for a broken arm), brainstorm solutions, are given materials and create prototypes.
Testing throughout the process addresses errors in real time and keeps rework to a minimum. The most common reason for this failure is a lack of need for the product. Successful products aren't just innovative ideas, they're solutions to problems shared by groups of people. The engineering design process is a remarkably flexible and useful way to look at many different kinds of problems. Here's a fun video that uses a the engineering design process to successfully solve what seems like a non-engineering problem.
This step can be repeated several times as more prototypes are created and evaluated. Having chosen your approach, the next step is to refine and improve the solution to create a design proposal. This stage can be ongoing through the length of your project and even after a product has been delivered to customers. By researching past projects you can avoid the problems faced by others.
After brainstorming, the team explores various alternative solutions fulfilling product requirements. Afterward, engineers start work on the detailed design of the finalized solution. The engineering design process is designed to be versatile to meet the requirements of different types of projects. The process allows for applied science, mathematics and engineering sciences to be used to achieve a high level of optimisation to meet the requirements of an objective.
This can be done by revisiting the requirements and bringing together your findings and ideas from previous steps. Once the problem is identified, engineers gather relevant information and resources. They consider existing solutions, and constraints, and specify the requirements for the project combining this knowledge into a set of specifications that guide the subsequent stages. The design process involves multiple iterations and redesigns of your final solution.
It outlines and analyses alternatives or methods of achieving the desired outcome. The feasibility study helps to narrow the scope of the project to identify the best scenario.A feasibility report is generated following which Post Feasibility Review is performed. The engineering team starts work on the detailed design of the selected solution. During this phase, the engineering team develops each block of the solution and analyzes the solution in detail. By working with multiple ideas and identifying potential design flaws early in the process, you can greatly reduce the risk of a product going all the way to completion with flaws.
Skip the wooden bathroom cabinet and use stone or marble for the entire vanity. If you have a sprawling bathroom, use tiny tiles to help delineate the space. Delicate hex tiles will be a forever classic, but why not have a little more fun in your own space? We love the look of larger tiles that still have the same retro feel as the originals. If your bathroom has high ceilings, try larger silhouettes such as this to ground the space. Make sure to do your best to make the most out of every square inch of space like with this sink and hamper combination from Bed Bath & Beyond.
DIY Bathroom Vanity Ideas for Custom Storage and Style
Another way to add subtle but impactful texture to your bathroom vanity is with subway tiled walls or half walls. It provides a neutral color to work with, while adding texture variance and intrigue to the area. Two separate counters with individual mirrors allow plenty of space for two people to get ready at once while still making the space feel cohesive and interesting. A basic wood theme is classic and adaptable for a variety of aesthetics.

Contemporary designs offer elegance and simplicity with an easy style. This design, which favors simplicity, serves both stylish and useful bathroom areas. The floating vanity design which includes a double sink, brings warmth and balance to the space with both its color and design.

All-over marble wraps this beautiful bathroom vanity and shower that's designed by Nina Garbiras of Fig NYC. To keep things clean, use matching finishes like antique brass to keep the room cohesive. Flip a flea market cabinet into a charming bathroom vanity and pop on a modern countertop for a one-of-a-kind piece that packs a lot of character per square foot. Subtly nautical, Jenny Wold designed this bathroom for a century-old Rhode Island home that's perched on the ocean's edge. For something a little softer, veer away from the rectangular vanity status quo and opt for a curvaceous bathroom centerpiece like designer Katie Ridder did in this powder room.
This clever bathroom vanity idea will allow you to use part of it as a dressing table – the nearest drawers could be used for storing makeup. Always make the most of your space, storage can be hard to come by in a bathroom so maximize it by being clever with your interior design choices. We love the chunky stone countertop that balances out the box style drawers, it looks great and provides ample space for bathroom bits and bobs. If you’re on a quest to give your bathroom a distinctive feel, then there’s no shortage of creative vanity ideas worth exploring.
This look keeps the eye looking up while still connecting it to the space. Minimalists by nature, Natalia Swarz and Armando Mesías make living in a 700-square-foot home (with a toddler) look easy thanks to a tranquil grouping of materials. In the bathroom, they combined olive green zellige tile and dim lighting to set a relaxing mood for nighttime baths with their little one. The way the shower is open without a glass door or curtain makes it easy to slide their daughter’s bathtub in there, too.
Stylish Walls and Backsplashes
The powder blue vanity is paired with a bold floral wallpaper, flower wall sconces and a rattan-wrapped mirror that’s both trendy and timeless. From color to hardware to cabinets, get inspired by these bathroom vanity ideas. In this bathroom with modern vanity, the eye-catching appeal of the ceramic bathroom backsplash draws attention and creates an accent wall. Having a strong design with a black vanity, the blue movement evolves into a softer and more inviting bathroom with a backsplash.
Bathrooms are full of moisture, and the vanity needs to survive this moist environment. Common places for vanity lighting are at face level on either side of the mirror or above it. You could have lights placed on the counter, but this isn’t as common. Having lights placed low puts them at risk of getting splashed by the sink and creates weird upward shadows. For an ultra-modern look, consider a mirror that has lighting built into it. This eliminates the need for additional lighting fixtures and creates the best shadow-free lighting for women applying makeup.
Use your vanity for a splash of bold color
Simply add a sink and a waterproof surface on top for a unique and stylish piece. For a more unique take on a double sink vanity, go for one long sink instead of two smaller ones to give your bathroom a true farmhouse feel. Additionally, wrap-around backsplashes are another option that will retain the integrity of the space. Subway tiles, either horizontally laid out or vertically stacked, along with marble backsplashes are the most popular ones to wrap around the bathroom. Also, don’t get surprised if you see the floors and walls clad in marble altogether, which delivers a sense of sophistication and elegance to the space.
‘This is so personal, but I would say perhaps items that are functional yet pretty, too,’ says Amy Leferink, owner and principal designer of Interior Impressions. Before you settle on a favorite fixture, you need to make sure it’s compatible with the connection on your vanity.

It's hard to go wrong with a light gray color in the bathroom, and this bathroom uses a beautiful, understated gray shade for a calming vanity that emphasizes the view from the windows. Start with locating the studs, and by using the screws, build the mainframe. Pre-cut the boards to the desired size (height, depth, and width) or assemble the pre-cut and perfectly-sized ones.
If you're organized enough to keep the space neat, a vanity with open storage can offer convenient access to often-used items and make a small bathroom feel more spacious. This custom-made vanity designed for a guest bath makes it easy for visitors to find what they need. Stained rather than painted, the vanity looks charmingly aged, while a vessel sink adds a bit of contemporary drama.
White connotes cleanliness and purity, which directly connects it to the bathroom as bathrooms serve as the spa center of our home where we treat ourselves. Thus, white bathroom vanities are excellent options to add a sense of lightness. They can be paired with brass and wood accents to create warmth and bring sparkle to the interior.
The brass handles cleverly link with the pendant light chain and bath towel hooks, so that helps to tie the look together successfully. Choosing the right bathroom vanity size depends on the available space in your bathroom and your personal needs. Measure the area where you plan to install the vanity, considering factors like door swings and clearances. Ensure there’s enough room for comfortable movement around the vanity. If space is limited, consider a smaller wall-mounted or corner vanity.
A custom countertop with a fitted sink and faucet changes the dresser's function, while a faux center drawer hides plumbing. Often tucked away and short on square footage, the powder room is an understated space that's relatively easy to revamp with a DIY vanity. This reclaimed pine desk accommodates a modest bowl sink and wall-mount faucet for plenty of counter space. Open shelving underneath creates an ideal spot for baskets to hold extra towels and toiletries. When designing a space, the best way to create a cohesive flow is to choose one finish and run with it. This gorgeous bathroom pairs brass sink fixtures with both the mirror and sconces, as well as the exposed pipes under the sink.
